I had a great idea to incorporate wheatgrass shots into my diet. The plan was to start the day with a couple of wheatgrass shots and reap the benefits. Boost of energy, agile mind, and improved digestion to name a few. I bought 6 oz of wheatgrass, juiced it, removed the frothy top layer and threw the first shot down my throat. Now, I was aware that wheatgrass has a bitter after taste, but my oh my, my taste buds were not ready for that kind of bitter – I just couldn’t willingly chuck another shot down my throat. Thus pineapple wheatgrass shots were born, and now my preferred method of imbibing wheatgrass.
In an effort to eat more healthily I plan on starting my days with a healing or energy giving breakfast. It’s a smart way to start the day. Yesterday I started the day with an apple avocado smoothie. Yum! It is a thoroughly delightful smoothie that will put a pep in your step once consumed. Every ingredient provides healing qualities and together may help to keep symptoms of cardiovascular disease in check. What could be better?
I’m always looking for foods that heal, or provide energy and stamina and beet juice does both. Beet juice is an exceptional juice, full of nitrates which aid stamina and blood flow, lowering blood pressure; which you may remember is my major health issue.
Currently, I can’t get enough red kale and endive, every time I sink my teeth into those greens, I feel as if I’m replenishing my body, guarding against disease and strengthening my immune system. To be frank, I feel really pleased with myself.
I’ve been sharing my red kale and endive stash with family and friends when they visit, and my most recent visitors, my mother and niece, had the pleasure of tasting my apple salad.
I sense a furrowed brow – I’ve been banging on about kale and endive and now I mention that I shared an apple salad. Well, my apple salad consists of red kale, endive and apple, laced with rice vinegar and olive oil. The reason I call it apple salad is because the kale and endive take a back seat to the apple in this salad, the rice vinegar allows the apple to thrive and is major on the tastebuds. Take a look.
It is now officially summer in NY the temperatures are mostly in the 80s so I no longer yearn for toasted bread piled high with something filling. Thankfully the warm weather chips away at my appetite and I can please my body with freshly made juices, smoothies and fresh fruit, no need to gobble bulky foods to ward off the cold. So today I made myself a maca smoothie with banana and peanut butter.
I discovered this yummy salad just recently – kale salad with carrots, cranberries and walnuts bathed in olive oil and lemon. It’s a treat, quick and easy.
If you’re trying to eat more healthily and finding it difficult, this is the salad for you. Really good fresh kale requires a serious chomp, it will take you time to get through a bowl of kale salad which is ideal when cutting down on calories or just simply trying to eat a healthier diet.
This kale salad can be your appetizer, or you can drop some chicken or fish into the mix to make for a more hearty main meal. I’ve enjoyed it with canned tuna seasoned with lemon and coarse ground salt and pepper, and I made it with bacon for my friend, Nicholas, Creative Director, Spicegrove Creative, and altogether cool guy, he loved it! I don’t know who was more surprised, me or him.
If walnuts aren’t your thing, you can substitute with sliced almonds or splurge on some raw cashews, go nuts!
If you offered me Albacore Tuna Sashimi with Ponzu 18 months ago, I would’ve screwed my face up and stormed out of sight. But now I’m open to it, and many of its variations, so long as it is paired with avocado and plied with complementing flavors. It’s confirmed, I’m a sashimi philistine! Luckily, there are restaurants that provide for raw food philistines like me, by creating food less traditional and somewhat culturally diverse. One of my favs is Katana. A robata and sushi bar in West Hollywood, LA. My dear friend Elisabeth Troy, singer/extraordinaire, introduced me to this restaurant. Great food, good wine and stellar a mbience and a very extensive sake list. But remember, I’m a philistine so the sake list was wasted on me. This wonderful eatery and bar, where the beautiful people eat, served up a plethora of exciting dishes, raw and cooked, and as I left the restaurant I experienced a yearning feeling, wondering when I would be able to return.
I haven’t returned as yet, but I have recreated and adapted their sashimi many times. Which is today’s recipe. You will need great quality fresh albacore tuna, at least one inch thick and a very sharp knife to cut your tuna into thin strips.
