This summer my niece and I have been doing some very valuable research. Where in NYC you can find a great spicy or smoky margarita and here is our top six:

Angel of Harlem#6 Angel of Harlem

Spicy Margarita available by request – very spicy.

Not surprisingly one of their bartenders, Naima Williams, has won a spot as finalist competing in the Uptown Battle of the Bars 2015: The Art of the Mix. The competition takes place on August 26 at MIST Harlem. I plan on being there to see who wins the title.

#5 The Vine at Eventi HotelThe Vine

Smoking Margarita – complex flavors, and of course smoky.

The Vine is a regular hotel bar, with classic modern decor with a very nice terrace, but where it differs from other hotel bars is the service. Instead of the usual polite patter and capable cocktail shaking, the staff at The Vine are like those bartenders at that place

“where everybody knows your name.”

Rosa Mexicano#4 Rosa Mexicana, Lincoln Center

Mezcalrita – another smoky cocktail but with a smack of sweetness.

The bartenders at Rosa Mexicana near the Lincoln Center never miss when making a cocktail, every order is just as you would expect it, if not a little better.

#3 Empellon TaqueriaEmpellon Taqueria

Spicy Cucumber Margarita – Spicy, yet cool.

There are three Empellon restaurants and many of their cocktails are available at them all. Their cocktail list is very diverse and inventive, you really feel that you’re experiencing something well thought out.  You should also try their smoked cashew dip, it is exceptional to say the least. They smoke the cashews over applewood themselves – unbelievable.

Delicatessen#2 Delicatessen

Jalepeno Ginger Margarita – nicely spicy

Excellent drinks at Delicatessen and smashing truffle fries. If you haven’t checked out this restaurant you really should. I recommend getting a table outside where the beautiful people sit.

Cafeteria#1 Cafeteria

Rude Margarita – superbly spicy

Cafeteria is one of my niece’s favorite restaurants. They have a great menu, epic cocktails, and they’re open 24 hours.  Who could ask for anything more?!
